Neuschwanstein, Castle in Fussen, Germany

I visisted the castle in September, 2004, and was astounded by how magical and magestic the castle looked. Once near the grounds, there are many places from which one can get a view of the castle. I remember one in particular: when we walked to the back of the castle, we came across a small bridge, which spanned a narrow ravine. The view of the castle and neighboring city from the bridge was breathtaking. I highly recommend that everyone visit this castle when in South Germany. The castle itself was constructed under the direction of the "mad" King Ludwig of Bavaria beginning in 1869. His intention was to recapture the glory found in the tales of the Teutonic Knights. The castle was to be a testament to the vivid and fantastic imagination of King Ludwig. The castle was close to completion in 1886, when King Ludwig was declared insane and arrested. He drowned a few days later under mysterious circumstances. After his death, the castle was named Neuschwanstein, which means the castle of the Swan Knight, Lohengrin, of Wagner's opera of the same name.
